Due to the fact that the local government thought it rather silly that they might just have said out loud that they were replacing the Proton Perdanas in government service with Honda Accords, thus leaving Proton with egg on their face, Proton and Honda were asked to team up to make a locally-assembled version, and they did. A good deal of the parts are still made by Honda though, and the resemblance is pretty obvious, save for some bits like the rear end (dammit Kinja).
However, those here who are interested in an Accord for less money will be disappointed, as it's government use only (like the Caprice, but less desirable) for now, with a redesigned version for the masses in two years' time.

I don't say things like this often about a car manufacturer...but who the fuck is Proton?!

Malaysia's home grown car manufacturer, infamous for badge engineering cars and Lancia-like build quality on its earlier cars. No worries, outside the UK it's virtually unknown in the English-speaking world...

Interesting.
Who knew Malaysia had a domestic car market?
(Obvious answer....you)

Proton used to be sold in the Philippines, but due to the Asia economic crisis, they were pulled out of our market.
The ONLY model that existed in our archipelago was the Wira, the third-gen Lancer with some restyling.

I played some old rally game on my Windows 95 computer years ago now and it featured a Proton Wira(sp?) that was pretty fun to drive.
I wonder what that game was, and more importantly, will it run on DOSBOX?

I had that same game. It would rain and snow, and after I hit everything in the world the windscreen wipers would stop working and I'd be screwed.

Yes, that's it! There was also a FWD VW Golf that had a 7 speed transmission. Man I miss that game, even though I have no idea what it was.

Ah yes, the Wira, one of those early cars with Lancia build quality. They'd outright tell you that it rusting was normal . It's why my father has hated Proton all this while...
And since you mentioned the Lancer connection, this becomes obligatory:
There are not enough anti-tank weapon weapons in the world to correct this...

Sounds interesting, do tell me about the game when you find out what it was.
An interesting tidbit about the rally versions of Proton cars is that they tend to be much better than the street cars for some reason other than "because race car" or the immortal "Lotus suspension tuning" (well they are the owners of Lotus): Actual engineering. Just because it's based on a Mitsubishi doesn't mean it will win rallies (I remember reading of a name but I've managed to forget it)
